MARA CONSERVANCIES

Wildlife populations are thriving in these private conservancies due to reduced human disturbance and improved ecological conditions. Limited numbers of lodges and vehicles, and strict viewing protocols make this the prime place for viewing.

The Transformation of Maasai Lands

Historically, the lands surrounding the Maasai Mara National Reserve were primarily used by the Maasai people for livestock grazing. However, a significant shift has occurred in recent decades, with these areas being transformed into exclusive wildlife sanctuaries known as conservancies.

While this partnership between conservation and local communities might seem straightforwardly beneficial, it's a relatively new concept in the region. The first conservancy was established in Selenkay near Amboseli in 1997, with the Mara region following suit in 2005. Nevertheless, the model has gained rapid traction, with numerous bush districts transitioning from cattle ranching to wildlife tourism and conservation. The Maasai people have not been entirely displaced. In many cases, they retain limited rights to graze their livestock within these conservancies, particularly in the areas connecting different protected zones.

Wildlife Flourishing in Conservancies

The success of the conservancy approach is evident in the thriving wildlife populations. In fact, it's often observed that wildlife numbers are higher in the conservancies than within the Maasai Mara National Reserve itself. This can be attributed to several factors. The conservancies generally experience lower levels of human disturbance compared to the national reserve, especially during peak tourist seasons.

Wildlife Abundance

The Masai Mara is a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise. It’s particularly celebrated for its remarkable concentration of big cats, especially lions. Visitors are often rewarded with close encounters with these majestic predators. Leopards, though more elusive, can also be spotted with relative ease due to their adaptability to vehicles. Cheetahs, perfectly suited to the open savannah, are another highlight. Beyond the big cats, the Mara offers plentiful opportunities to observe other iconic African species. Elephants and buffalo are common sights, while the elusive black rhino can be found in the Mara Triangle.

The Masai Mara is a visual feast, characterized by its expansive grassland savannah. The landscape is punctuated by acacia woodlands, riverine forests along the Mara River, and rocky hills. The Maasai name "Mara" itself means "spotted," a fitting description of this diverse terrain. The Oloololo Escarpment, which forms the northern boundary, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the entire ecosystem.

Best time to visit

The Masai Mara enjoys a pleasant climate year-round, with average temperatures hovering around 26°C (79°F) during the dry season (June to October). This period is generally considered the best time to visit, as the weather is ideal, wildlife is concentrated near water sources, and the possibility of witnessing the Great Migration is high. The wet season (November to May), while offering lush landscapes, can bring rain and potentially muddy conditions.

However, the short dry spell between the two rainy seasons (January and February) is also a favorable time to visit, with comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds.
