THE FULL STORY
Arrivals often set the tone: guests typically step straight off a dhow or speedboat onto the sand, where staff wade out to collect luggage before guiding you up into the heart of the hotel. The soul of Peponi is its seafront terrace, open to the public and alive throughout the day with swimmers, sailors, locals and travellers gathering for coffee, lunch or sundowners. Behind it sits the well-stocked bar, a shady courtyard reception and activity hub, and the main dining room, which opens onto its own residents’ terrace and a private dining space for special occasions. From here, the hotel unfolds into lush tropical gardens on the southern side, while across a public path to the north lies the palm garden, a broad lawn dotted with coconut trees and fronted by a row of sea-facing rooms.
Accommodation is varied and individual, reflecting the hotel’s gradual growth rather than a uniform design. Standard rooms are simple but stylish, with wooden shutters, mangrove-pole ceilings, mosquito nets, ceiling fans and solar-powered hot-water showers. Superior rooms are more sought-after, offering better-appointed bathrooms and private roof terraces furnished with loungers or swinging daybeds, while the much-loved “Top Room” sits above the dining area with expansive views over the channel, beach and village rooftops. A small number of spacious, air-conditioned suites function more like apartments, complete with kitchens, and suit longer stays or families seeking additional privacy. Throughout, the aesthetic is coastal Swahili rather than overtly luxurious, prioritising atmosphere, light and location over polish.
Peponi’s setting makes it an ideal base for exploring both land and sea. Shela village lies immediately behind the hotel, while Lamu Town is just 15 minutes away by boat. Guests can stroll the beach at dawn, wander Shela’s backstreets, or take guided cultural visits to Lamu’s UNESCO-listed old town. On the water, activities range from snorkelling, diving and sailing to sunset dhow cruises, dolphin watching and fishing trips around the archipelago. The Korschen family has also played a key role in local sea turtle conservation, and guests may be invited to witness turtle hatchlings emerging on nearby nesting beaches.
Food is a highlight and a major reason Peponi remains a social hub. The kitchen has long enjoyed an excellent reputation, overseen in recent years by Ray Cournede, widely regarded as one of Kenya’s top chefs. Dining is à la carte throughout the day, with breakfasts featuring homemade Swahili breads, cakes and an impressive range of marmalades, while lunches and dinners span fresh seafood, international favourites and Swahili specialities. Meals can be taken almost anywhere — in the dining room, by the pool, on the terrace or in the privacy of your room — reinforcing the hotel’s relaxed, guest-led ethos.
Popular with couples, long-standing repeat visitors and multi-generational families, Peponi has a lively, convivial atmosphere that feels deeply woven into the fabric of Lamu life. While children are welcome and well catered for, the hotel retains a distinctly adult, social mood, and some areas reflect its age rather than modern resort standards. What Peponi offers instead is something far rarer: a sense of place, history and community, paired with one of the best beachfront locations on the Kenyan coast.
