  • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THIS TRIP

Located on a tree island in the centre of the breathtaking Busanga Plains is stylish Shumba Camp. Its six luxury tented units are spacious, en-suite with both indoor and outdoor showers, and all raised on wooden platforms with spectacular views of the surrounding plains.

The bar and dining area is shaded by spectacular fig trees and boasts magnificent vistas over the open wildlife-rich plains. Dinner takes place either on the deck or in the cosy boma, along with a little Zambian culture while the camp’s main deck is a perfect place to star gaze or relax after your evening meal. The area is a magnet for a wealth of plains game, followed by lion, wild dog and cheetah.

  • CONSERVATION

    Anti-Poaching in Kafue

Prior to our presence, Kafue saw significant poaching in the 1980s and game numbers declined before beginning to recover in the 1990s with the growth of ecotourism in Zambia. Wilderness Safaris currently supports the game scouts and anti-poaching units of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (previously ZAWA) logistically and financially year round.

    Kafue Lion Project

Wilderness Trust funded a strategic management plan for lions in the greater Kafue National Park (KNP) system, including the surrounding Game Management Areas, which is contributing towards a better understanding and the sustainable management of the lion populations of KNP and Zambia as a whole.

    Community Initiatives

As Wilderness Safaris began to operate in Kafue, opportunities arose to partner with the local people. Employment opportunities were the first step, initially in construction as more than 150 casual labourers from remote surrounding villages helped to build the camps, and then later in the camps. With permanent employment has come training and skills development.
