MATUSADONA AND KARIBA
Lakes and shores of the Zambezi >

Matusadona

Imagine yourself standing on the shores of Lake Kariba, a vast inland sea reflecting the fiery African sunset, as elephants trumpet serenades and hippos frolic in the water. This is the unforgettable setting of a safari in Matusadona National Park, where wilderness and wonder intertwine for an adventure unlike any other.

Matusadona, established in 1958, whispers stories of ancient times. Its name echoes the "Matuzviadonha" hills, sacred to the local Tonga people. Kariba, on the other hand, is a modern marvel, born from the damming of the mighty Zambezi River in the 1950s. Together, they paint a rich tapestry of past and present, where nature and conservation stand in harmonious balance.

From the grassy plains dotted with ancient baobab trees to the rugged escarpments overlooking the lake, Matusadona boasts a stunning diversity of habitats. Each ecosystem teems with its own cast of characters, creating a mosaic of wonder and home to a remarkable array of wildlife. Witness the largest elephants on the floodplains against a stunning sunset, or watch the stealthy grace of lions stalking their prey. Look skyward for eagles soaring on thermals, and keep an eye out for leopards camouflaged in the shadows. You might even encounter the endangered black rhino, a rare and thrilling sight.

Whether you seek rustic charm or luxurious comfort, Matusadona and Kariba offer a range of lodges to suit your style. Imagine waking up in a tented camp perched on a hilltop, the sounds of the African bush your lullaby. Or choose a lodge on the shores of the lake, where hippos serenade you at night and elephants quench their thirst at dawn. Best visited in the dry season (May to October) when the landscape is a dramatic palette of ochre and burnt orange, with animals converging around waterholes and the water's edge.

Safari drives are only the beginning. Embrace the wilderness with exciting activities. Hop on a boat and cruise across Lake Kariba, spotting crocodiles basking on the banks and fish eagles perched on branches. Hike through the bush with experienced guides, tracking lions and learning about the intricate secrets of the ecosystem. You can even cast your line in the Zambezi River, hoping to land a feisty tigerfish or bream.

Getting to Matusadona and Kariba adds to the excitement. Fly into Kariba Airport, or into one of the smaller airstrips closer to your lodge, and you'll be met with panoramic views of the lake and the park's rugged beauty.

Matusadona and Kariba are not just a safari destination; they are a portal to a world where time slows down, senses awaken, and memories are etched in your soul. So, pack your spirit of adventure, open your heart to the wild, and prepare to be swept away by the magic of this unforgettable wilderness paradise.
