THE FULL STORY
Chumbe Island Lodge offers an unforgettable blend of romance, simplicity and environmental stewardship in one of East Africa’s most pristine settings. The lodge consists of seven handcrafted eco‑bungalows designed to harmonise with the island’s natural beauty, each built from local materials and operating entirely on solar power and rainwater catchment systems. The interiors are open and breezy, with hammocks and handmade furnishings that reflect local craftsmanship, and many of the sleeping platforms open up to offer uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean.
Life on Chumbe is intentionally unhurried and close to nature. There are no conventional luxury frills such as air conditioning or pools; instead, the focus is on the extraordinary environment that surrounds you. Meals feature fresh, locally sourced ingredients and traditional flavours, enjoyed in a relaxed seafront setting. With visitor numbers strictly limited, the lodge maintains a sense of privacy and exclusivity, perfect for couples, solo travellers and nature lovers who appreciate authentic experiences over resort‑style amenities.
What truly sets Chumbe apart is its commitment to conservation. The lodge operates as part of the Chumbe Island Coral Park, a privately managed protected area that supports one of the richest shallow reef ecosystems in the region, along with dense coral rag forest and rare wildlife. Staying here means your visit directly supports ongoing environmental protection and local education programmes, making it both a rewarding and responsible travel choice.
Chumbe Island Lodge’s facilities are deliberately simple but thoughtfully designed to minimise environmental impact while maximising connection with the surrounding landscape. Accommodation comes in solar‑powered bungalows furnished with comfortable beds, handmade furniture and hammocks, each with an en‑suite bathroom featuring a solar‑heated shower and eco‑toilet. The main visitor centre includes a restaurant and lounge area overlooking the sea, where guests enjoy daily meals prepared from locally sourced produce.
There is no swimming pool; instead, the warm Indian Ocean and pristine coral reef provide a natural playground. Snorkelling here is exceptional, with abundant coral and marine life accessible directly from the beach or with guided excursions. Guided forest walks introduce guests to the island’s unique flora and fauna, and evening coconut crab walks offer a chance to observe the world’s largest land crabs. Intertidal walks at low tide reveal fascinating marine creatures, and a climb up the historic lighthouse rewards you with 360‑degree views of the island and ocean. Birdwatching, wildlife observation and quiet moments on secluded beaches or in shaded forest spaces complete the range of activities, ensuring a deeply rejuvenating and environmentally enriching stay.
Chumbe Island is reached by a short boat ride from Zanzibar’s southwest coast, usually departing from Kizimkazi village. The journey takes around 30 minutes on a small motorboat, offering scenic views of the turquoise waters and surrounding islands. Visitors are collected by the lodge or arranged transfers, ensuring a smooth and straightforward arrival to this private conservation-focused island.
The best time to visit Chumbe Island is during Zanzibar’s dry seasons from June to October and December to February, when the weather is sunny, the sea is calm, and snorkeling conditions are at their best. The island is perfect as a short nature-focused retreat either at the start or end of a Zanzibar or Tanzania itinerary, providing peace, privacy, and access to one of East Africa’s most pristine coral reef ecosystems.
