Pole Pole, meaning “slowly, slowly” in Swahili, perfectly captures the essence of this small and characterful lodge on Mafia Island. Nestled along a quiet stretch of white-sand beach within the Chole Bay Marine Park, the lodge is designed to blend harmoniously with its surroundings, offering a calm, unpretentious atmosphere where time naturally slows.

The lodge comprises just nine beautifully crafted bungalows arranged on a gentle slope above the shoreline, each enjoying sea views and cooling ocean breezes. Built using natural materials and traditional techniques, the bungalows feel light and airy, with wooden floors, soft neutral tones, and spacious verandahs furnished with daybeds for lounging. Some bungalows feature private plunge pools, adding an extra layer of privacy and comfort.

At the heart of the lodge is the open-sided main area, which includes a relaxed lounge, bar, and dining space overlooking the bay. Meals are a highlight, with a menu inspired by Italian and Swahili influences and an emphasis on fresh seafood, local produce, and simple, well-executed flavours. Dining is typically informal and sociable, either under shade or outdoors by the sea.

Pole Pole’s setting within a marine park ensures access to pristine waters, coral reefs, and a rich diversity of marine life. A curved swimming pool with views across the bay provides a refreshing alternative to the sea, while the overall ambience remains understated, friendly, and deeply connected to nature. This is a lodge for travellers who value authenticity, privacy, and a sense of place over flashy luxury. Mafia Island is a lot smaller and quieter than Zanzibar, we like it for that reason.

There is a swimming pool overlooking the bay, complete with shaded lounging areas and a poolside bar. Guests can also enjoy spa treatments in a tranquil gazebo setting. Additional amenities include Wi-Fi in rooms, laundry service, a small gift shop, books and board games, and in-room safes.

The lodge is ideally positioned for exploring the marine environment of Mafia Island. Snorkelling and scuba diving reveal vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life within the marine park. Traditional dhow excursions take guests to sandbanks and nearby islands for swimming and picnics, while sunset cruises offer a relaxed way to experience the coastline. Seasonal highlights include whale shark encounters and whale watching.

On land, guided village visits and cultural walks provide insight into local island life, while mangrove forests and nearby ruins can be explored on foot or by boat. Island tours by vehicle allow guests to discover more remote corners of Mafia, including scenic viewpoints and historic landmarks. For those who prefer to slow things down completely, relaxing on the beach or beside the pool is very much part of the Pole Pole experience.

Most visitors reach Pole Pole via a scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam or Southern Tanzanian parks, to Mafia Island Airport, which takes about 40–50 minutes. From the airport, the lodge arranges a 15–20 minute road transfer to Chole Bay.

Pole Pole is best enjoyed as a post-safari beach extension after game drives in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Selous, or Ruaha - more commonly from Southern Tanzania safaris from where there are direct flights. It is close to Dar es Salaam and easy to combine northern Tanzania safaris. A stay of 2–4 nights allows time to relax, snorkel, dive, and explore the marine life of Chole Bay.
