BUHOMA LODGE IS ONE OF THE ORIGINAL AND MOST CHARACTERFUL PROPERTIES IN BWINDI IMPENETRABLE FOREST, SET WITHIN THE NATIONAL PARK ITSELF AND OVERLOOKING THE DENSE CANOPY OF THIS ANCIENT RAINFOREST. ITS LOCATION IS EXCEPTIONAL—JUST A SHORT WALK FROM THE BUHOMA PARK HEADQUARTERS, WHERE GORILLA TREKKING BEGINS—MAKING IT ONE OF THE MOST CONVENIENT AND ATMOSPHERIC BASES FOR THIS ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME EXPERIENCE.
THE FULL STORY
Elevated on a forested ridge, the lodge feels immersed in the landscape, with mist often drifting through the trees and the sounds of the forest ever-present. The design is simple, warm and deeply in keeping with its surroundings. Built using locally sourced materials, the lodge has an understated, eco-conscious feel, with wooden walkways linking the chalets to a central lounge and dining area. The main lodge space is open and inviting, centred around a fireplace that becomes a natural gathering point in the cool mountain evenings. Large windows and terraces frame uninterrupted views into the forest.
Accommodation is in a small number of individually designed chalets, each set slightly apart for privacy and positioned to maximise views across the forest canopy. The rooms are spacious and comfortable rather than overly luxurious, with large beds, en-suite bathrooms and private verandas where guests can sit and watch the forest come alive. Interiors are thoughtfully done with natural materials and soft lighting, and features such as rain showers, hot water and solar power ensure a comfortable stay while maintaining a low environmental footprint.
Meals are freshly prepared using local produce and served either indoors or outside depending on the weather, adding to the relaxed and homely atmosphere. Wi-Fi and charging facilities are available in the main area, while the overall feel remains intimate and personal, with service that reflects the lodge’s long-standing presence in the region.
Activities are naturally focused on gorilla trekking, beyond trekking, guided forest walks reveal Bwindi’s extraordinary biodiversity, including other primates and an impressive range of birdlife, while community visits offer insight into local life, from village walks to cultural encounters with the Batwa people.
Access is typically via a scheduled or charter flight to Kihihi airstrip followed by a scenic road transfer.
