THE FULL STORY
The design of Nile Safari Lodge is rooted in natural materials and traditional building techniques, elevated with a contemporary sense of style. I thought it was an architectural masterpiece, one of the most stylish lodges I have seen - and my favourite in Uganda. Thatched roofs, timber structures and stone elements are used throughout, creating a warm, organic aesthetic that blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. The main lodge areas are open and airy, designed to maximise views of the Nile while allowing natural light and breezes to flow through. The layout is spacious yet intimate, with pathways winding through the forest and linking private suites to communal spaces, reinforcing a sense of seclusion and connection to nature.
Accommodation at the lodge consists of a collection of bandas and larger villas, each positioned for privacy and uninterrupted river views. Each unit includes a private deck and plunge pool overlooking the Nile, creating a serene space to relax between activities. The bathrooms are particularly striking, often incorporating freestanding bathtubs and a huge rain shower with indoor-outdoor elements that enhance the sense of immersion. For families or small groups, the villas provide additional space and exclusivity while maintaining the same refined aesthetic.
The lodge has a central infinity pool with floating bar, overlooking the river, while the spa provides a variety of treatments designed to enhance relaxation. The lodge also has a bar and restaurant where we enjoyed some really fine food, tables are also set with panoramic river views. Sustainability is a key focus, with solar power, careful water management and community engagement forming part of the lodge’s ethos.
From Nile Safari Lodge, guests can experience the full range of activities that make Murchison Falls National Park so compelling. Game drives on the northern bank offer sightings of elephants, giraffes, lions and other plains wildlife, while boat safaris along the Nile provide close encounters with hippos, crocodiles and abundant birdlife. A visit to the top of Murchison Falls is a highlight, where the Nile surges dramatically through a narrow gorge. For those wishing to diversify their experience, chimpanzee trekking in nearby Budongo Forest can also be arranged, adding a primate-focused element to a classic safari itinerary.
Nile Safari Lodge is located on the southern bank of the Nile within Murchison Falls National Park, in a quieter area that offers both privacy and easy access to the park’s key attractions. It is well positioned for boat trips along the river and for crossing to the northern sector for game drives. Access is typically via a scheduled or charter flight from Entebbe to Bugungu or Pakuba airstrips, followed by a road transfer, or by a scenic drive of approximately five to six hours from Kampala. The combination of accessibility and seclusion makes it a convenient yet exclusive base for exploring the region.
