THE FULL STORY
The style of the lodge is classic African bush simplicity fused with understated comfort: eight thatched and canvas-walled chalets with gauze panels and natural materials are spaced to maximise privacy, each oriented toward the waterhole so you can watch elephants, buffalo and birds come to drink right from your deck. The main area is an open thatched lounge and communal dining space where guests gather around the campfire at dawn and dusk under vast African skies.
Rooms are spacious safari chalets with en-suite bathrooms, overhead fans and solar-powered lighting and hot water that reflect the camp’s eco-friendly ethos, with mosquito nets, simple furnishings and private views over permanent water so wildlife watching feels continuous.
Facilities are relaxed but functional, centred on the main lodge with lounge, dining and fire pit where meals and sundowners become social highlights, and there’s a wildlife hide by the waterhole for close-up observation; services like laundry and transfers can be arranged, and the camp’s professional guides share deep knowledge of the bush.
Activities focus on classic safari adventures with morning and afternoon game drives across diverse habitats, incredible walking safaris with up-close encounters, nocturnal drives to see night creatures and birdwatching, all led by highly regarded Zimbabwean guides who make sightings, tracks and bush lore come alive. Camp Hwange has numerous log-pile hides at various waterholes that offer amazing on the ground viewing of all the wildlife at the waterholes, which is prolific in the dry months from July to November.
Camp Hwange’s location is in the north half of Hwange National Park, reachable by a roughly three-hour drive from Victoria Falls along tar and park roads or more quickly by scheduled charter flight to their own nearby airstrip followed by a game drive into camp; this remoteness enhances the sense of wilderness and immersion in Africa’s largest national park.
Our guests have commented on the excellent guiding and wildlife encounters, saying the tents are comfortable with breathtaking waterhole views and the staff friendly and attentive. Most of our travellers got to enjoy up close elephant walks and superb sunset drives, and loved the plentiful game and birds at the waterhole. The relaxed atmosphere around the campfire is a highlights for everyone.
