4* LODGE
The Hide Camp is a much-loved safari camp set in a private concession on the edge of Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, positioned to overlook a busy waterhole and open vlei where elephants, buffalo, giraffe and plains game frequently gather, giving a strong sense of immersion in the wilderness right from camp. It has a relaxed, comfortable ambiance that blends with its bush surroundings rather than feeling formal, with friendly hosts and experienced guides helping shape every day’s adventure.
THE FULL STORY
The style of the lodge is classic African bush safari with thatched and canvas-walled structures forming spacious tented chalets arranged to maximise waterhole views; the main lounge, dining area and deck open onto the wide landscape so that wildlife feels ever present, and the camp’s understated design reflects a connection to the natural environment over luxury opulence. Interiors are simple yet comfortable with indoors and outdoors merging through private verandas where game viewing begins at dawn and continues long into the evening.
Rooms consist of a mix of deluxe, family and honeymoon tents, each with ensuite bathrooms, fan cooling for warmer months and warm bedding for cooler nights, all with private verandas overlooking the waterhole so you can watch animals drink without leaving your deck; some tents also feature outdoor baths or showers to heighten the safari experience under open skies.
Facilities include a central thatched lounge and dining area, a sun deck and swimming pool for relaxing between drives, fire pits for evening gatherings, and an underground hide close to the water’s edge that allows immersive wildlife observation, while personalised service and small-camp intimacy contribute to a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Activities are classic Hwange safari pursuits with morning and afternoon game drives, guided bush walks, night drives with spotlighting, and dedicated hide sits at the waterhole to watch wildlife up close, all led by knowledgeable guides who read animal behaviour and make every outing rewarding; the camp also offers a unique “Dove’s Nest” sleep-out experience for those who want to watch stars and wildlife in solitude.
Getting to The Hide generally means flying into the nearest airstrip followed by a 25 minute road transfer. Road transfers from Victoria Falls are also possible.
The Hide has managed to find the friendliest camp managers who make everyone feel very welcome. Guests frequently praise the excellent wildlife viewing right at the camp, with many sightings of elephants, lions and diverse birdlife at the waterhole; they also comment on the warm, attentive staff and high-quality food, the comfortable and spacious tents with great views, and the flexible, knowledgeable guiding that makes each safari outing memorable. The tents have their own style and are not modern or new, it is also located on the edge of the park, near to the railway line where occasional trains do pass.
