QUEEN ELIZABETH NP
Queen Elizabeth National Park, located in western Uganda between Lakes Edward and George, is one of the country’s most scenic and diverse national parks. Spanning nearly 2,000 square kilometers, it borders the Rwenzori Mountains and stretches across savannah, crater lakes, wetlands, and lush forested gorges, creating a rich mosaic of habitats.
The park is home to over 95 species of mammals and 600+ bird species, making it a prime safari destination. Visitors can spot elephants, buffalo, hippos, leopards, hyenas, and the famous tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha sector. Birdlife is exceptional, with African fish eagles, pink-backed pelicans, shoebills, and countless waterbirds populating the area.
One of the park's highlights is Kyambura Gorge, a deep forested ravine home to a small population of chimpanzees, offering a unique primate tracking experience.
Must-See Attractions are the Kazinga Channel, best experienced on a boat cruise that typically reveals large groups of hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and vibrant birdlife. Kyambura Gorge cuts through the park and is the place for chimpanzee tracking and birding walks. The Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth NP is known for its iconic tree-climbing lions, so if you can spend some time there in the hope of seeing them up high in teh branches! Scenic drives around ancient volcanic craters and crater lakes offer dramatic views and photo opportunities.
There are also community and cultural visits along with nature walks and crater hikes.
Queen Elizabeth National Park is a perfect blend of landscape, wildlife, and cultural experiences. Whether tracking chimpanzees, spotting lions in fig trees, or cruising along a hippo-filled channel, it offers a memorable and immersive safari adventure in the heart of Uganda.
