Updated covid & vaccine entry requirements for safaris to Africa

Here is an updated list of entry requirements for the various countries that we travel to;

South Africa

  • All vaccinated travelers are exempt from taking a PCR test prior to departure for South Africa.

  • Download, print and complete the Traveller Health Questionnaire (Entry) not more than 2 days before arrival. The same applies when leaving South Africa.

  • All unvaccinated travelers older than 11 years are required to present a valid, printed certificate of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to departure. The test must be conducted by a certified medical practitioner and the certificate must have the name and signature of the practitioner who conducted the test.

  • Outbound travellers from South Africa must continue to comply with the requirements of the country of destination.

  • The mask mandate has also been extended indefinitely - masks need to be worn indoors in all public areas.

Botswana

  • Fully vaccinated travelers are not required to present a negative COVID-19 PCR test result on arrival. Presentation of a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate is required. 'Fully vaccinated' means having received a primary series of COVID-19 vaccine.

  • Travelers who are not fully vaccinated must present a printed original test certificate of a negative COVID-19 PCR test result not older than 72 hours from time of testing, and undergo a PCR test at their own cost on arrival.

Zimbabwe

  • Fully vaccinated travelers need to present proof of vaccination on entry to Zimbabwe and on exit. No PCR test is required. "Fully vaccinated" means complete doses of a vaccine, i.e., two doses of a two-dose regiment or a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

  • All partially vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers are required to present a negative PCR COVID-19 Clearance Certificate obtained within 48 hours of boarding. On departure, a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours is required.

Tanzania

  • Fully vaccinated travelers are not required to take a PCR test before arrival and must show a vaccination certificate with a QR code upon arrival. Vaccines must be approved for use by the Republic of Tanzania and the WHO.

  • All travelers (including children) are required to complete a Traveler's Health Surveillance Form, to be submitted within 24 hours before arrival in Tanzania. Upon submission, you will receive a Unique Health Code that will be requested during primary screening on arrival.

  • Unvaccinated travelers older than 5 years must present a negative certificate for a PCR COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of arrival in Tanzania.

Kenya

  • Fully vaccinated travelers are exempt from PCR testing.

  • Unvaccinated travelers (older than 5 years) who meet the above exemption criteria are required to present a negative result for a valid PCR test conducted within 72 hours before departure for Kenya.

  • Unvaccinated travelers who meet the above exemption criteria are required to undergo rapid antigen testing on arrival at a cost of USD 30. Any positive results will require a further PCR test at a cost of USD 50, and self isolation.

Mozambique

  • Unvaccinated travellers over the age of 11 must present a negative PCR test however and travellers who do not present a vaccine certificate or PCR test must do an antigen test on arrival. All others must show a proof vaccination for entry.

Namibia

  • Fully vaccinated travelers are not required to take a PCR test before arriving in Namibia, and must present a hard copy of their vaccination card.

  • All unvaccinated travelers older than 5 years must present a negative certificate (hard copy) for a PCR test that was carried out within 72 hours from the time taken to the time of arrival into Namibia. Before arriving in Namibia, all PCR test certificates must be uploaded to the Trusted Travel (TT) platform. Travellers with results from non-TT compliant labs must upload results to the Global Haven system. Only test results from the Trusted Travel platform or results that have been verified on the Global Haven system will be valid for entry.

Rwanda

  • Passengers no longer need to take a PCR test prior to their departure for Kigali, according to a notice issued by the Ministry of Health in mid May.

  • A rapid antigen test taken 72 hours before departure is now accepted. Travellers still have to take a second antigen test at their own expense (US$5/R80) on arrival at Kigali.

  • A COVID-19 test is not mandatory for children under five who are accompanied by an adult.

  • All travellers arriving and transiting in Rwanda must complete the passenger locator form and upload their negative COVID-19 rapid antigen test certificate.
