This is a common question – and the truth is: there’s no single ‘best’ age. We’ can arrange inspiring safaris for children of all ages although of course different age children will enjoy different things. Imagine them seeing their first African wildlife, that they have only seen in books and on screens - it can be a life-changing event that shapes their thinking forever. There are some practical factors, many families choose to wait until their children are around eight and above. At this age, they can participate in most activities (excluding walking safaris), engage more deeply with what they’re seeing, and leave with vivid, lasting memories. For many, it’s the perfect first safari age. I have taken my own children on safari at a young age. My son was absolutely gripped by everything he saw, and also loved being able to stand up in an open vehicle. With a younger generation, you can choose malaria-free destinations, child-friendly lodges with swimming pools and a gentle pace, easing them into Africa. It may not be that huge elephant or hunting leopard that excites them, it may be some warthogs wallowing in the camp grounds, or watching a dung beetle tussle over a dung ball.
For teenagers one could look for a bit more adventure and independence. From walking safaris and canoe excursions to getting hands-on with conservation activities or maybe learning photography and capturing moments of the trip. Gorillas are only viewable from an age of 15 and upwards, how amazing would it be to reward your child in some way with an experience like that! Multi-generational trips are common now, what could be more satisfying than seeing the joy of grandparents and grandchildren and the entire family savoring outdoor experiences together - the pure focus of your immediate environment brings the whole family together. No screens and devices other than cameras and Gopros! Check out our family safaris page |
