Discover the Selous Game reserve & Nyerere National Park on a luxury safari.

I recently had a chance to visit Tanzania and two wonderful parks, the Ruaha National Park and Selous Game Reserve, now called Nyerere National Park - to get a fresh look at some camps, new and old. In the first of blog posts from my trip, here is a video of the Selous or actually the Nyerere National Park. The Nyerere National Park is the wildlife protected area to the north of the Rufiji River, where no hunting is allowed. Good news is that a few years back, much of the hunting in the Selous Game Reserve was banned, so we expect animal numbers and general viewing to thrive in the years coming - it is a great time to visit.

Key things to note about Nyerere/Selous;

  • It is easily accessed from Dar es Salaam with a 30 minute flight

  • It is very close to Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia and Fanjove Islands to add a beach element

  • The Hydro-Electric dam being constructed at Stiegler's Gorge on the Rufiji River is well advanced and while trucks are evident on the main park roads, game drive areas are pretty much unaffacted.

  • Julius Nyerere Airport in Dar es Salaam is a modern and new facility that makes it an easy access point on numerous airlines - KLM, Lufthansa, Qatar, Emirates, Ethipian, Kenya Airways and more...
